E-homestays are a new idea in English language learning. NOW you can experience using your English! E-homestays allow you to experience going abroad, before, after, or without actually making a trip. Pacific Interactive College has a mission to create learning experiences that were not possible before for many English language learners.
Pacific Interactive College originates in research carried out by founder Stephen F. Culhane, PhD with second language learners of English. Here is an overview of the background for our mission:
- An extensive research program and a series of follow-up studies provided an essential link between the amount of language a learner acquired and the cultural milieu they did this learning in.
- In regards to study abroad programs, this meant that simply going abroad did not, surprisingly, ensure significant levels of English learning! Rather, the degree to which an individual incorporated a positive attitude toward interacting within English seemed to be a key indicator of how well they achieved in their goal to improve their English skills.
- The links between positive or negative intercultural contact experiences within the second language being studied, were drawn out in a model, later termed, 'the Intercultural Interaction Model' (Culhane, 2001; 2002; 2004; 2006; 2007).
- PCI College programs aim to provide positive intercultural contact experiences for learners who are soon to go abroad, are currently abroad, or merely want to enhance the reality of the language study program they are undergoing.
